Testing

Students in Rutherford County participate in the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) which assesses academic achievement in grades
3 – 12. The components of TCAP are: |
- Achievement – This test is administered over several days in the spring of the school year to students in grades 3 – 8. Students are assessed in reading/Language Arts, math, science and social studies.

- Writing – Students in grades 5, 8 and 11 are administered this assessment of writing skills in February of each year. Students in grade 5 write a narrative essay. Students in grade 8 respond to an expository prompts and students in grade 11 are asked to write a persuasive essay.

- End of Course (AYP) – Students who enter high school beginning in the fall of the 2009 – 2010 school year will take exams in English II, Algebra I and Biology at the completion of the course. The results of these exams will count 20% of their second semester grade in 2010 and 2011 after which it will count 25%. These exams are untimed and are used to calculate Adequate Yearly Progress for secondary schools.

- End of Course – Students who enter high school beginning in the fall of the 2009 – 2010 school year will take exams in English I and United States History. The results of these exams will count 20% of their second semester grade in 2010 and 2011 after which it will count 25%. These exams are timed.
