This website has been created as a Professional Learning Communities resource for Rutherford County teachers and administrators.  Content will include descriptions of the key elements of a PLC along with frequently asked questions and comments on how implementation of a school’s PLC is progressing.

Rutherford County is using the PLC model described in Learning by Doing – A Handbook for Professional Learning Communities at Work by Richard DuFour, Rebecca DuFour, Robert Eaker, and Thomas Many (Copyright 2006 by Solution Tree).  The work of a PLC is a paradigm shift in that it focuses on student learning outcomes.  The process addresses four critical questions:

  1. What is it we want our students to learn?
  2. How will we know if each student has learned it?
  3. How will we respond when some students do not learn it?
  4. How can we extend and enrich the learning for students who have demonstrated proficiency?

This website has been designed to address seven PLC informational topics:  (1) Team Formation, (2) Team Norms, (3) Smart Goals, (4) Essential Learning, (5) Common Formative Assessments, (6) Analysis of Formative Assessments, and
(7) Interventions for Students.  There is also a section for testimonials titled  What’s Working in Rutherford County’s PLCs?

The authors of Learning by Doing have also created an Internet site that includes additional information and a blog for PLC discussion.
